Elementary Mathematics M.S.Ed.
This program is designed to prepare elementary teachers as mathematics specialists (math coach, math resource teacher, math teacher in a departmentalized setting, or math curriculum specialists) although many elementary teachers complete this program for the purpose of becoming more effective teaching elementary mathematics in their classroom.
Upon completion of this program and passage of the Missouri Content Assessment for Elementary Mathematics Specialists, certified elementary teachers in Missouri with 2 years of experience can apply for the Elementary Mathematics Specialists (Grades 1-6) certification.
Program Admission Requirements
- A minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 on the undergraduate transcript OR an undergraduate overall GPA of 2.50 to 2.74 and a 3.0 GPA on six hours of required graduate coursework at Northwest in the major program where admission is requested.
- Documentation of a valid teaching certificate.
- Documentation of one of the following:
- Successful completion of another Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least a 2.75 GPA OR
- National Board Certification OR
- Successful completion of nationally normed educational performance assessment or content assessment OR
- Department analytical writing assessment that is evaluated using a writing scoring guide based on the modified CUNY scales with a score of 4.0 or higher. OR
- Recent teaching evaluation
Research Component
The degree candidate will participate in a research component related to the use of data in the field of education. This data project will be completed during a data literacy course. This research component must be completed prior to graduation/certification.
Professional Development Experience
The degree candidate will satisfy the professional development component through the capstone Practicum for Elementary Mathematics Specialists course.
