Political Science: American Institutions Emphasis
The Northwest Core (44-47 hours)
Institutional Requirements (4 hours)
Political Science Foundations (27 hours)
POLS 34102 and MATH 17114: These courses fulfill a Northwest Core requirement as well as a requirement of the major, but the number of credit hours may be counted only once toward the total number of credit hours required for graduation.
POLS 34497 Research Seminar may only be taken for credit after the completion of 90 credit hours. It may be repeated for credit with a different topic after the Political Science Foundations requirement has been met.
American Institution Foundations (18 hours)
Students must take two out of three (6 hours) of the following courses: POLS 34301 Elections, Parties, and Interest Groups, POLS 34302 American Presidency, and POLS 34303 American Congress). Students must choose to take either POLS 34405 American Political Thought or POLS 34459 Justice: Theories and Applications. Courses not taken to fulfill the American Institutions Foundations may be taken as Political Science Electives.
Political Science Electives (15 hours)
Choose 15 hours from the following courses:
POLS 34492 Research in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Studies, POLS 34493 Internship in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Studies, and POLS 34496 Internship in Political Science-non-major/minor credit may not be taken as a Political Science Elective.
POLS 34105 African World cannot be taken to fulfill NW Core requirements if taken for the major.
POLS 34462 Comparative Political Systems and Behaviors and POLS 34465 Substantive Policy may be taken for repeat credit with different topics.
POLS 34495 Internship in Political Science is limited to six hours in Political Science Electives.
POLS 34497 Research Seminar in Political Science may be taken for repeat credit with a different topic after it has been taken to fulfill the Political Science Foundations requirement and only after the completion of 90 hours.
Advisor-Approved Electives Pertaining to American Institutions (6 hours)
These electives must be approved at the discretion of the faculty advisor and must pertain to the study of American political institutions or to the study of political theory, law, or legal studies. Some courses selected may have prerequisite requirements that must be completed and may not count towards electives in the degree.

POLS 34462 Comparative Political Systems may be taken for repeat credit with a different topic in addition to the six hours required in the Global Affairs Foundations.
POLS 34465 Substantive Policy may be taken for repeat credit with a different topic.
