EDCI 62401 Understanding the Whole Child in Grades 1-3

This course orients candidates to the concept of the "whole child" by focusing on the developmental characteristics, needs, and capabilities of children in grades 1 to 3, across the following developmental domains: physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, and moral.  It emphasizes the development of literacy, numeracy, and scientific reasoning.  As prospective teachers of young children, candidates will be facilitated to use this information to inform their planning of learning experiences for children in grades 1 to 3 while recognizing and valuing families as partners in supporting children's development.  The positive image of the child as competent, capable, and industrious, lays the foundation and framework for a strengths-based approach to working with ALL children including those with special needs and rights.  Prerequisite:  EDCI 62232.  Corequisite:  EDCI 62326, EDCI 62425, EDCI 62426, EDCI 62427, and EDCI 62435.
